Was looking over the Revised beta (ver1.04), and I saw this in the Heroic Characters rules (pg 274): “Heroic PCs do not get the usual number of foci at first level.” What does this mean? Do heroic 1st-level PCs not get foci at all, or do they get some number other than the usual?
The regular (non-heroic) rules (if I’m reading them right) are that 1st-level PCs get one focus, plus Warriors and Experts get an extra focus (or two extra foci for a combined Partial Warrior/Partial Expert). The heroic rules do say that “a Heroic Warrior has the same hit point bonus and extra combat focus of an ordinary Warrior,” so I’m guessing that heroic PCs start out with no focus, but Warriors and Experts still get their extra(s).
That's actually a typo- they get the normal starting allotment, but they get new ones at every even level instead of the usual progression.
+Kevin Crawford OK, thanks. Another thing: By my reading, revised PCs get fewer skills than first edition PCs, right? But the skills are broader. There looks to be an equivalent of the first edition background packages, but it seems like the foci replace the class training packages. Do I have that right, or is there something I missed?
The general dynamic is fewer, broader skills, yes. There is no intentional mapping of 1e->Revised components, however- the foci do things that are just flatly not included in 1e.
+Kevin Crawford Oh, another thing: When designing alien PCs (pg 231) for a heroic game, how does the Tough benefit (first hit die always rolls maximum) work with the Heroic PC hit point rules (PCs always get half maximum HP)?
I'd give 'em one more hit point per level.
