Hey there folks! I'm currently working on a cyberpunk hack of Ben Milton's Knave.

Cyberpunk is all about gangs, corporations, governments, etc. and I absolutely love the faction mechanics from Stars Without Number. I was wondering what the logistics would be if I wanted to rip those rules, reflavor them, and use them in my own game that I might publish one day.

I mean, the faction rules are technically free on DTRPG thanks to SWN's free version. Does that mean that I can just take the free parts and use them?

I really hope I don't come off as ignorant or that I'm trying to full on steal +Kevin Crawford 's work or anything. I just truly don't know how creative commons works given that this is my first time making something for the OSR.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If you use your own wording, there's nothing at all morally or legally wrong with ripping the mechanics wholesale. SWN itself isn't under Creative Commons licensing, or OGL, or any other particular arrangement, but my understanding is that mechanics in of themselves can't be copyrighted- and it'd be scandalously hypocritical of me if I were to try anyway.

Make sure you give proper accreditation and it's usually good form to gush a bit in your acknowledgments about how you love what you're stealing from. Remember that plagiarism is the most sincere form of theft.

+Kevin Crawford Wow thanks so much for the quick response. It'll take me a while to get to that section for my game, but whenever I do, I'll shoot it your way if you want to glance at it. But I'll absolutely use my own words for everything 👍🏼
