Hello again, parties who have heard of/and may be interested in the project I've been stewing on for some time. In short, it's a small fan-supplement of Words, called Librum de Verbis (A Book of Words, or so Google assures me, from Latin) and additionally compiling some of the Words KC's left around the internet in a section called 'Stray Apocrypha.' Stray Apocrypha was also meant to contain additional gifts for all of the Words published in the free version.

The short of this is, Librum de Verbis is, essentially dead. You can view its remains in a link below. For the longer version of this, please read on.

This post is to advise that; while I've still got the energy and work acumen to produce something that you may use at your tables, I've run into a few snags. Google Docs is simply not a good platform to contain the amount of content I've already made. Editing the document is a small nightmare. Formatting is informal, and the Table of Contents is a mess (I'd much prefer a proper ToC).

In addition to that, in light of the updates KC's given to the Lexicon of the Throne, my 'Stray Apocrypha' section has become smaller and smaller. It once included Music, Deserts, and Fear, though now it ought to be restricted to Blood, Frost, Memory, and Sight.

I've also considered making a random artifact-and-ward generation tool, but my generators are amateur at best, so it may be something added someplace in the back. In all, the predicted pagecount would have come up to around 40-50 pages.

Now onto the good of all of this. Working on this, together with the feedback from folks here, and the Ebon Dragon's Rostrum on discord, including users Wafflesquad, Lord Darkview, Exthalion, and TavelGorge (there) and others, I've achieved a solid understanding of the mechanics behind balancing gifts. I will never hold the conceit that my mastery is near approaching that of Kevin Crawford, but my hope is that what I produce will be of use to players and GMs.

Further good: I still intend to produce Librum de Verbis, though this time I'll be making it in TeXstudio. It will take some time to learn the ins-and-outs, but I'm quite passionate about formatting and coding alike, so my hope is that it will be a good fit. Once I have a rough draft, I'll be sharing it with you all. For now, please accept the humble, skeletal offering of 13 Words, and five pieces of Stray Apocrypha in the link below.

In summation: Librum de Verbis is dead. Long live Librum de Verbis.

Available Words in the skeleton (above): Covenant, Decay, Essence, Grace, Hearth, Hunger, Ink, Metal, Mist, Passage, Shield, Torment, Truth (13)
- Stray Apocrypha: Blood, Frost, Desert, Memory, Sight

Projected Words: Covenant, Decay, Essence, Grace, Green, Hearth, Hunger, Ink, Metal, Mist, Passage, Rivers, Shield, Stories, Thunder, Torment, Truth, Void (18)
Possibly: Parasite, Moon, Swamps, Gourmet (4)

Stray Apocrypha: Blood, Flesh, Frost, Memory, Sight (with a definite MAYBE on Flesh).

Possibly also an Artifact Generator.

Early Workflow projections see a rough draft by the end of the Summer season, should nothing go wrong, with early drafts in the coming weeks (depending on how long learning TEX takes me).

I say all of this, only to configure TeXstudio properly, crack open the TeX Book and find that the tome is... 'bout 500 pages long.

So, Summer might not be when I share something. It may be even (and unfortunately) later. Once I do have something, I'll share it; however, but for now I'm wasting valuable time that could be spent consuming this voluminous publication.

This looks great! The words seem to be done very well. I like Shield very much.
I'm sure you've seen Scribus mentioned somewhere, but it is pretty straightforward to use.

I write most of my stuff in LaTeX anyway. Want me to give it a pass so that you have something to work off?

+Martin Bentley I have some formatting down; the interface is weird to me and texstudio doesn't like three space indents (but I haven't checked the settings) what I primarily need atm is methods to do the table of contents manually and just a bit more in order to put this together. I'm considering logo ideas atm.

Why are you doing it manually? \tableofcontents should do it....
If you need something that is not a \section in the table of contents, \addcontentsline{toc}{section}{New section title} will do it. You can change {section} to {chapter} or whatever else you need.

That's essentially my goal. I'll want to style it, as well. I'm looking how to do that thing.

Try this: drive.google.com - Librum de Verbis - Google Drive
I have not tried to make it look good at all, but it parses, and the structure is there.

Note that I use pdfLaTeX, so if you are using pure TeX for some reason, it might not compile. (It is stopping on a weird error, but it is nearly 2am, so I can live with it. Just force it to carry on and you should get the PDF output.)

+Martin Bentley Ah, wow. This does give me quite a bit to work with. I'm going to finish out the layout/formatting probably in the next two days, if you wouldn't mind taking a look over it for me. The document is really a mess, with no less than 11 \usepackages

Martin Bentley
2018-02-08T14:58:50.985Z

Sure. Fling it over when you are ready.
I will say that I am not sure that TeX is the best for this type of document though. It works well for textbooks, but for stuff like this it might not be ideal because it takes away control of exact placement and such.

+Martin Bentley I'm getting there, slow but steady.

drive.google.com - LibrumdeVerbis.pdf

(Once the chapters at the back have pages, the pesky 1 in the footer of the artifacts chapter will be gone. I also need to format the TOC)

I completely 110% agree with and love your Conceit: Engines of Reality note. I really think this element adds to the setting and meab s such things as a Word about being an Unbound wouldn't exist.

I'll be watching this with keen interest. I've been interested in some of the good work done here, but I'm also interested in seeing a TeX template appropriate to Godbound. Once Lexicon drops, I will consider drafting and releasing a more sophisticated take on my own GB-EX conversion: Words of the Chosen. TeX seems like a better option than GDocs, at that point.

+Lord Darkview I'll get out a formal res template for Words. Something commented, smallish... and easy.

Additionally, an update. This is the first early draft at a cover. I have page decoration picked out, I just need the mouse.

+Mason Munden that works be amazing. If I develop an appropriate option for headers and subheaders thereafter, I'll probably add it. And the cover looks great.

Another update, showing formatting of Words and the In-Play sidebar. I had to remake the background because I'd foolishly made it 850 x 1100 pixels, instead of 2550 x 3300.

Mason Munden

It does not, however, look great at 100% zoom in most PDF viewers.

Much nicer, I should say.
