HI there. Wonder if anyone can help me.

Regarding the Starfarer focus it says this under Level 2

Level 2: Double your Pilot skill for all spike drill-related
skill checks. Spike drives of ships you navigate
are treated as one level higher; thus, a drive-1 is
treated as a drive-2, up to a maximum of drive-7.
Spike drills you personally oversee take only half
the time they would otherwise require.

What I want to know is what the last sentence means. Does this mean that preparations take half the time or dows this mean that the journey itself takes half the time? (i.e. it takes 15 minutes instead of 30) The players and I initially read this as the journey time taking half the time as usual but when I thought about it that would nearly break the game as you as you may as well have double the drive rating otherwise.

I have taken it to mean what your players interpret it as. Yes, your ship goes fast, and far. Faster And farther than anyone else. But that's two focus picks, so if your game is not predominantly about space travel and exploration, it's a bit of a bummer for the PC who had sunk two foci into Starfarer.

It's not really game breaking, but it means that your PC ship can really get around, and will almost never fail a Spike drill roll. This is both good and bad, because there's nothing like 6 days of mandatory R&R to reduce System Strain, and for the tech to spend time upgrading gear with mods.

Definitely good if the PCs are explorers and privateers. Hehe.

Yep Kevin's confirmed it on Reddit so you're right.
I think I didn't use the right term when I said 'breaking'. It just sounded odd to read when the game makes a point of suggesting that spike drives are dangerous and that high level spike drives are TL5 technology

Wow, yeah, good to learn that the half travel times doesn't apply to travel within a given system, but increased spike drive values do.
