Guys, could anyone give me tips on how to make my Solo SH combats more interesting? I get kinda sad when it turns into a "punch u punch me" kind of combat :(
Part of the old school "style" is narrating the results of combat. Have you read Matt Finch's Old School Primer (the section "Way of the Ming Vase")? Read some authors who are good with action scenes and emulate them: Salvatore, Howard, Abercrombie, Jordan, Sanderson.
If the fights are trivial, make them harder (Hankerin/Runehammer talks about monster "AI"), or try adding in crits/fumbles or other mechanics.
If you tend more towards "soft", narrative-focused play, then stick to that and maybe just have a single, opposed roll to determine combat rather than slogging through it ito get to the next plot element.
Hmmmm, well, speaking of Hankerin, I have his ICRPG in which he recommends adding a Threat, a Timer and a Treat to all battles, which follows the gamey spirit of the game rules. I don't know if such addition is compatible with OSR rulings and spirit.
Write down all the gory details , any parry's or dodges and explicit deaths . Read them back and you cant wait for another fight .
