I have two SWN:R issues that have come up in play and I'm looking for help with.

Issue 1 revolves around ship combat and surprise attacks. Is there a surprise round in ship combat? Is it possible for one ship to attack another without the target having detected it's attacker? How precisely would that work out? I have a house rule, but I'm wondering if there's something more official.

Issue 2 pertains to ammunition and encumbrance. I have a PC with 3 different firearms on her person. Each has a different magazine capacity. Her encumbrance is running tight, so details here matter. Pages 61 and 71 indicate that 3 magazines equates to 1 item. However, page 66 indicates bullets are interchangeable. This leads to a weird situation where she buys a certain number of bullets, but the load encumbrances ought to very based on the type of weapon their for, yet they're interchangeable. So how does that work?

Issue 1: There's nothing that says that a ship that is undetected can't make a sneaky first strike. I think that might actually be the goal of 99% of pre-battle preparations, no?

Issue 2: I don't play like that, since my players and I are generally willing to track different kinds of ammo. Certainly pistols, revolvers and SMGs can use the same ammo, and so can rifles, autorifles and sniper rifles, if I were thinking hard about it.

However, even if the bullets are interchangeable, the magazines are not. The magazines need to be accounted for, regardless of which weapon they're used with.

The encumbrance rules make finding Fold Boxes and other space-saving TL5 pretech items very important!

1) By default, there's no surprise round in starship combat. You might be able to sneak up on a ship and force it into an engagement by avoiding its scans until it's too late for it to run, but once you get close enough to shoot somebody there's no TL4 stealth tech that can hide your relatively massive energy signature.

2) If she really wants to carry three different firearms and neither of you like the ammunition compatibility handwaving via counting full mags, just track each ammo type separately. If weapon A has a 6-round mag and weapon B has a 15-round mag, then 12 rounds of the first is two items and 30 rounds of the second is two items.
