So, I started reading Embers of War by Gareth Powell which has a sentient ship as one of the main characters.

Any thoughts on having an AI PC as a ship? Would it act like just another character in a role during starship contact?

Without the Split Focus processing routine, they would still only count as a single crew member. With it, they could potentially crew all automated functions of the ship.
